Worst moments in world history.

There is a song by Neil Young called "Cortez the Killer" that is a ballad loosely based on this man. He was a spanish conquistador that amongst other things destroyed the great city of Tenochtitlan home of the Aztec's. At the time of the slaughter the city is argued to be one of the most populace cities in the world. It housed the cultural wonders of the Aztec which shares roots among the even older cultures of Southern and Central America. The Aztecs had a system of math and astronomy that had a degree of accuracy that in some ways matches what we have today. Architecturally significant buildings are still found, but in vast states of disrepair.

We have little to no true knowledge of this culture and of the other cultures in the region from the same time period (eg. Incas). Due to the invasion of the Europeans into the so-called "new world" we have lost a vast chunk of human history that we can never regain.

The vast loss of human life, the loss of incomprehensible cultural knowledge has forever been all but wiped of the face of the Earth. This is among the worst tragedies humanity has faced.

Were it the only one, but time and again events such as this have occurred. What else have we lost in the past that we will never get back and will it ever end?

They apparently conquered neighboring city states and slaughtered entire populations, thereby providing the needed moral equivalency.

That was pretty bad, but not on the same scale by Rogerborg (2.00 / 0) #2 Wed Apr 20, 2005 at 08:06:06 AM EST
As when Tara got shot in Buffy the Vampire Slayer.  No more hot lesbian action!*

* Kernickie or whatever in the rumoured series 7 doesn't count because that series never happened.

quipu by sootzoo (2.00 / 0) #3 Wed Apr 20, 2005 at 08:11:05 AM EST
Since you mention the Incas, I should mention Quipu, which is an almost completely unknown form of writing/mathematics to which no known translation exists. Basically, it's a cord of fabric with strands of knotted fabric attached with varying numbers of knots.

It's more than simply the number of knots, though; also the placement, distance between the cords, knots, and the length of the structure itself that varies, leading to the supposition that it was an early form of quick/dirty communication, as they already had a fairly sizable empire and well-developed roads, and might make use of this to monitor the health/strength of their empire.

A couple of pre-doc friends of mine introduced me to the structure, and our understanding of it continues to develop (albeit frustratingly slowly). I believe the current interpretation is that, unlike an alphabet or mathematical system that has a predefined structure for expression, you get instead a more relative understanding of the "author's" intent with a quipu strand. Similar to how, say, a yield sign may have no particular meaning to an alien culture, we interpret things like shape and color (even in the absence of language) to define the importance and meaning of that symbol. Etc. I could go on; it's fascinating - I'm glad you brought up the Incas and made me remember that.

Quipu by ChiefHoser (2.00 / 0) #4 Wed Apr 20, 2005 at 08:52:54 AM EST
I had forgotten all about quipu until you mentioned it. Yet another thing that is forever lost to us. Who knows what information is locked into the patterns of knots and colours.

Remember that library? Well, all of the knowledge that it contained dissapeared.

The end of the Roman Empire and beginning of the dark ages was not a good time for knowledge either, and we lost a whole lot of information back then as well (even though the Catholics and Muslims held onto some of it.)

There's a lot of stuff we don't know that would be beneficial today. How did Stonehenge or the pyramids get built? How is a mummy made? There are lots of things that are lost that we still haven't even figured out a better way to do. We can't figure out how to make something better than the old Damascus steel. We can't figure out how to make better cement than in ancient times. We've screwed ourselves on knowledge.

Just like any good Catholic. Like all good Catholics all down through history. Preserving the faith. Correcting heresies. Converting the heathenuninformed.
